Porn, Prostitution, and Censorship, The Politics of Empowerment

So, I’m pretty sure the universe wanted me to check out Porn, Prostitution, and Censorship, The Politics of Empowerment, yesterday since I came across it while reading about it on several different sites LAWeekly, LAist and XBiz.  Then after a facebook friend, suggested that I go, I said “ehhh, sure why not”

I honestly was a extremely hesitant about going, because first off… I am not a UCLA student (…For god sake’s I’m a FIDM grad that majored in Fashion Design), I was pretty sure I was going to feel a bit out of my element but I really just wanted to be that fly on the wall that soaked in my surroundings.

After reading the description, I knew this panel could go in all types of directions but I really came to hear how Tasha Reign and Jessica Drake would represent all of their fellow porn performers.

I’m not quite engulfed in the adult film business but I am around it a lot because I sell their end product at Excitement, the Adult Shop I work at.  I’ve always been around on the angle of helping others, educating them about the adult products I sell, enjoying themselves and just being a simple “sales associate”.

When, I tell people that I work at an Adult Shop for some reason… I’m automatically talked down to.  A lot of people treat me a like an uneducated fool that works here because I can’t do anything else, which is completely the opposite.  By telling a person where I work it allows me to see a person’s true self to see if they are judging me as a person or on the nature of my job.  In that next moment after telling them where I work is liberating… I discover their moral values, upbringings and/or their ignorance towards porn and sexuality in a heart beat.  It’s kind of great. haha I’ve noticed this scenario a lot but it was such a pleasant surprise how the panel touched on this in a way and how the girls have felt the same way.

Social acceptance (and sex education) starts on how you were raised and possibly on your religious beliefs.  Many people have been taught not to talk about sex and if you do… hey! you might be a freaking harlot.  So, if you do decide to watch porn that just goes over the deep end, when in reality all Porn is… is a FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT. It’s an act of what all humans do or fantasize about.  haha For goodness sake’s Sasha Reign recently came out with her “Sasha’s Pony Tales” film … if that doesn’t let you know that Adult films are more for entertainment at times, then I don’t know what to tell you. haha

The whole topic, if porn does the duty of Objectification vs. Appreciation of Women just made me laugh a little because it’s hard to debate it. I don’t want to state all my thoughts but I do think that adult films are given the opportunity to show women in all shapes, colors, sizes and do a pretty good job with all the various genres out there. It allows me to appreciate the human body more since we are all built different and personally makes me feel empowered.  Since, I’ve started working at an adult shop my self-esteem has increased so much.  Which probably sounds ridiculous but I’ve embraced my sexuality,  I see more of the genres instead of being ignorant and thinking there is a cookie cutter way to how a porn performer is supposed to look like or a regular girl for that matter.  There are so many girls out there that I am a bit jealous of at times, but not because of their looks but i’m jealous of their confidence that I want to attain. 😀  These girls show their bodies, put it on a pedestal and perform to try and re enact a person’s deepest fantasies!  Can you do that? Not everyone can be filmed while having sex, let alone even talk about sex.  I have gained so much respect for porn performers over time that I want to be their mini cheerleader! haha

I see how the regular film and entertainment industry segregates and degrades a person based on their looks, when in the adult films they are embraced.  A lot of people might not agree with me but it might be because they aren’t familiar with all the films out there.

You got a little bit of fluff? don’t worry LOTS of women love BBW.
Are you hairy like a beast? girl or boy, there are fans of that.
Are you all kinky? There is plenty of fetish friendly porn to cater to your needs.
You’re a mutt? Don’t worry there are so many racial and interracial porn, it’s ridiculous… because many people don’t realize that… all humans have sex. 0_0

I did love how Tasha Reign, talked about how Girlfriend Films have some of the most diverse and natural looking girls out there.   Since, it’s one of my go-tos for lesbian porn.  Some of the porn out there may not be for everyone, myself included but it’s because there are so many different people in to so many different things. If a girl’s fetish is being a “Cum dumpster” and there is a guy that wants to dump his cum on her, then ROCK ON! because both of those consenting adults on film are doing acts that might turn on someone other than you.  Porn isn’t there to tell you, you need to do this to or with your partner, its just visual stimulation that might entice you.

There are porn that has a “degrading” manner but it’s because that is how it is suppose to be portrayed and it’s how the female might get off.  It is in no manner devaluing her as a person and I did want to scream from the rooftops last night that, guess what? A lot of my customers I’ve had both in Oregon and in California LOVE FEMDOM.  Where are the guys trying to defend those men? haha

I wish I would’ve recorded this for you, if you didn’t attend because there were so many topics and discussions that were so fabulous for all to hear.  [2.20.2014 Edit: I could’ve gone on and on… if you’ve met me you’d know this haha but I found this article on xbiz  and had to add this in here since it hit the spots I didn’t hehe <3  ]

I did get the chance at the end to talk to Jessica Drake, mainly because I wanted to once again, be a porn star’s cheerleader! haha but mainly to tell her, that I think that she nailed everything on point.  I appreciate her work into trying to educate others with her educational adult films.  *eyes down a few of my customers* I know, I’ve made a lot of you guys watch those or a few of her other fun films.  Her love for trying to help a person love themselves and their partners is inspirational. I can’t wait to see more of her work and spread the word. Keep at it miss Jessica Drake!~

ALSO! I do want to Thank SANAA-Social Awareness Network for Activism through Art and USAC Student Wellness Commission for putting this event on for your UCLA V-Day: One Billion Rising. I did bring along two friends and I know that it was a mind-opening experience for them.
